Religion in my Family

Growing up, I was not religious. I lived in a small town in Malaysia where religion was just not a big aspect of life. It just wasn’t brought up. I knew some of my family members went to their temples and churches and we’d often pass by those buildings but it never interested me as a child.

My mother’s side of the family is Taoist/Buddhist. They prayed to Tua Pek Kong (大伯公) and occasionally I would witness my grandmother burning incense and giving food and mock-cash offerings to her ancestors.

My father’s side of the family is Non-denominational Christian. They were more religious as my great grandfather was a pastor. My grandmother would start her day by reading passages out of the bible and they would hold weekly bible studies classes in their living room.
